How Aluminum Is MadeHow Aluminum Is Made

Aluminum is a chemical element that is¬†silvery-white, soft, nonmagnetic and ductile. Aluminum is the third most abundant element in the Earth’s crust (after oxygen and silicon) and it’s most abundant metal.

The pure form of aluminum does not naturally occur in nature. The aluminum production process starts with the mining of bauxites, an aluminium rich mineral in in the form of aluminium hydroxide. About 90% of global bauxite supply is found in tropical areas.

Metallic aluminum has many properties that make it useful in a wide range of applications. It is lightweight, strong, nonmagnetic, and nontoxic. It conducts heat and electricity and reflects heat and light.

Unlike iron, aluminum is corrosion resistant so it can be remelted and reused an infinite number of times.
