Mil Mi-26 towing a Chinook like it’s no big deal!

mil mi-26The Mil Mi-26 Halo, is a Soviet/Russian heavy transport helicopter. Operated by both military and civilian operators, it is the largest and most powerful helicopter to have gone into series production. The Mi-26 was designed to replace earlier Mi-6 and Mi-12 heavy lift helicopters. In order to act as a heavy-lift helicopter for military and civil use, it has twice the cabin space and payload of the Mi-6. The primary purpose of the Mi-26 was to transport military equipment such as the 13 metric ton (29,000 lb) amphibious armored personnel carriers and mobile ballistic missiles. These would be transported to remote locations after delivery by military transport planes such as the Antonov An-22 orIlyushin Il-76.

But keep in mind that the CH-47, itself a heavy-lift helicopter, is no small bite by any means. The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is an American twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter. It has a wide loading ramp at the rear of the fuselage and three external ventral cargo hooks. With a top speed of 170 knots (196 mph, 315 km/h) the helicopter was faster than contemporary 1960’s utility helicopters and attack helicopters, and is still one of the fastest helicopters in the US inventory. The CH-47 is among the heaviest lifting Western helicopters. Check out how this heavy lifting chopper seems like a piece of cake for the giant Mil MI-26!!
