Volkswagen BUDD-e is bringing a futuristic platform to the 21st century

Volkswagen BUDD-eVolkswagen BUDD-e made its debut at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show. The Volkswagen BUDD-e is a small electric van that is capable of tapping into nostalgia while casting a bright-green glow over the company. The iconic Microbus inspired the German automaker to try and bring it to the 21st century. But, that is only an inspiration – we don’t want the¬†image of the Microbus we got in our heads to be ruined. Though, we like the Volkswagen BUDD-e.

What meets the eye is definitely appealing. The Volkswagen BUDD-e is not a retro design. However, with the V-shaped  grille behind the large VW badge and a nearly one-box form, it does evoke the spirit of the Type 2 Microbus- just a bit.

Volkswagen BUDD-e is bringing a futuristic platform to the 21st century

Volkswagen BUDD-eThe Volkswagen od 2016 is a bit more clinical and it was accused of emissions cheating. Luckily, the Volkswagen BUDD-e is an all-electric vehicle.

Two motors power the BUDD-e. One on the front that produces 100 kW and 148 lb-ft of torque and another at the back with 125 kW and 214 lb-ft of torque. That’s what feeds the Volkswagen BUDD-e eco-friendly image. The all-wheel-drive urge results in 6.9-seconds from 0 to 60. In addition, it reaches 112 mph as a top speed and has up to 233 miles of range.

Nevertheless, more important that the statistics is the Modular Electric Drive Kit platform on which the BUDD-e sits. This electric platform doesn’t have the need for any combustion engine packaging constraints. This will surely play a great part in the future of VW electric vehicles. Well, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for us.
