Another type is the pilot-operated relief valve that are specialized and fitted to serve a particular purpose. Furthermore, a vacuum safety valve prevents a tank from collapsing. As I’ve already mention there are many types of safety valves, however, they all have a similar purpose.

Safety valvesThe primary purse of a safety valve is to protect property, environment and life. Not only does it relieve pressure from vessels or equipment but, it also re-closes and prevent further release of fluid. Of course, that is after the normal conditions are restored.

Safety valves are safety devices, however, they are the last line of defense in many cases. That’s why it is really important to ensure that they are capable of operating at all times and under all kinds of circumstances.

To understand the existence of the safety valves, we need to look at the reasons for execss pressure in a vessel. There are surely many but, the most common are:

  1. Heat exchanger tube rupture
  2. Thermal expansion
  3. Blocked discharge
  4. Cooling system failure
  5. Chemical reaction
