However, let’s start from the beginning. An intake manifold takes in air and sends in to the combustion chamber of the engine. Basically, this is how the whole combustion process starts. If there are shorter runners, you’ll notice greater horsepower numbers when, in the rev rage, the engine is up. Nevertheless, to make the best of both worlds, you’ll need a variable intake manifold.

Over a greater rev range, a variable intake manifold adjusts airflow to optimize horsepower. In addition to the names that I’ve mentioned above, this system is also called a variable resonance induction system. But, the automakers that use it, call it by different names. Ford utilizes a DSI system ( Dual-Stage Intake), while BMW utilizes DIVA and DISA.

Of course, there are many other examples and variations of this type of system. Their may work slightly different but, they all have one purpose – to optimize airflow into the engine.
