VW announces ‘TSI Evo’, complete with a variable geometry turbo

VW says its new 1.5-litre TSI Evo marks the first time a VGT has been fitted to a mass-market petrol-powered engine

The new four-cylinder engine uses variable-geometry turbocharging to allow maximum torque from as low as 1,300rpm. VW claims it is the first time we’ve seen this in a volume-produced spark ignition engine.

Available in both 128bhp and 148bhp form, the 1.5-litre TSI is said to be 10 per cent more efficient than the current engine, and uses one litre less fuel over 62 miles.

The great thing about the new 1.5-litre engine is it’s versatility and ability to be dropped straight into existing models as well as new models as a result of the dimensions remaining very similar to the ones currently used.

Volkswagen has said the new engine will launch in late 2016. Though it hasn’t declared where we’ll see it yet, the outgoing 1.4 TSI features heavily in the Polo and Golf ranges.
