How does engine braking work? How does a jake brake work? This video will look at gasoline engine braking, and diesel engine braking.

A Jake brake is an engine braking mechanism installed on some diesel engines. When activated, it opens exhaust valves in the cylinders after the compression cycle, releasing the compressed air trapped in the cylinders, and slowing the vehicle. An Engine braking on the other hands, occurs when the retarding forces within an engine are used to slow a vehicle down, as opposed to using additional external braking mechanisms such as friction brakes or magnetic brakes.
